Genomic information is complex, and it is not always easy to understand what test results mean - especially for patients found to be at high risk to develop certain diseases or conditions. GenomicMD's Genomic Risk Guides provide detailed information about certain diseases or conditions on the Lifetime Genomics Risk Assessment, answer many commonly asked questions about genetic and more specifically polygenic risk, and help contextualize the concept of genetic versus total risk when discussing these conditions and our report.
Our Genomic Risk Guides were developed by medical professionals who are experts in the field of genetics and are based on standard medical management guidelines as well as published data for the applicable diseases/conditions. Please note that currently there are no professional guidelines on how to manage a patient with a high polygenic risk for any condition, or whether that management should differ from the average population. As such, these resources are designed to supply patients with general information on the disorder of interest, note additional factors that may compound their risk, and help guide them through conversations with their healthcare team about ways to lower their overall likelihood of developing a given condition.
